The Canary Islands are an archipelago of the Kingdom of Spain consisting of seven islands of volcanic origin which are located in the Atlantic Ocean off the north-western coast of Africa (Morocco and the Western Sahara). The Canary Islands are made up of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera and Hierro. The nearest island is Fuerteventura which is 108 km from the northwest African coast.

The Teide volcano on Tenerife is the highest mountain in Spain and the third largest volcano on Earth. Four of Spain's thirteen national parks are located in the Canary Islands.

The country in general is mountainous and volcanic; in Tenerife the Pico de Teide, reaches the height of 12,200 feet, and towers above other mountains throughout the islands. Natural caverns abound, some of them very extensive and there is no main river but a number of springs and torrents. The fauna is similar to the rest of Europe, with the exception of the dromedary and the canary-bird. There are extensive forests of pine and laurel with some stems reaching a gigantic height. The climate of the islands is mild and they are much frequented as winter resorts. The Canary Islands are essentially agricultural with fertile soil producing an abundance of fruits, sugar cane, and tobacco.

The islands are made up of two provinces, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. The capital is Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Known in ancient times as the "Fortunate Islands” and were once believed to be the western limit of the world visited in the Middle Ages by Arabs, Genoese, Majorcans, Portuguese, and French.

The islands became a stop on the route for Spanish trading vessels with the New World and today agriculture is an economic mainstay, as well as an expanding tourist trade. The Canary Islands are now one of the biggest tourist destinations to people from the UK, Ireland and Germany with more than 10 million visiting the Islands in total every year.
