To the Spanish La Palma is known as the “beautiful island” or the “green Island” and is one of the smaller, main islands in the Canaries.
People visit La Palma for peace and quiet, the mountains and the varied green landscapes more than they do for the beaches.
The near perfect year round temperatures and the green sub tropical landscape provide the island with ideal growing conditions for bananas and a whole range of fruits.
If you are a serious trekker or walker then head for the Caldera de Taburiente (National Park), which is home to an enormous crater that is almost 17km around the rim. The crater dips almost 3500m deep and is almost completely covered in a huge pine forest.
The peeks at the centre of La Palma rise high enough to get above the clouds and one of the most famous peeks in La Palma is home to the European Observatory. Unfortunately entry to the main observatory is not permitted but you can walk around the grounds with prior permission.
The island covers a total area of around 700 sq kms and has in the region of 80,000 permanent residents. Apart from being home to the worlds largest crater La Palma is also home to massive peeks that rise to 2,400 metres above sea level. The main airport at La Palma handles around 1,000,000 passengers that mostly arrive on the island on charter flights from Spain, the UK and other parts of Europe. There are several flights per day to the nieghbouring Islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. |
