Lanzarote is the eastern most Island in the Canary Islands. As with the seven other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is in the Atlantic Ocean and just 60 kms from the African coastline. The Spanish mainland is actually 1000kms to the north of Lanzarote.
The weather on Lanzarote is what keeps the visitors coming throughout the year. The island has mild, warm winters that hover around 21ºC whilst the summer months are not exposed to that hot, intense heat that you get on the Spanish mainland.
Arrecife is the main capital city. The town is home to about 50% of the islands inhabitants along with the main International Airport, Arrecife Airport. Over recent years the number of charter and low cost flights heading into Arrecife Airport have been growing in numbers.
If you take the island of Lanzarote and include the smaller islands of Alegranza, Montana Clara, La Graciosa and Roque del Este y del Oeste there are over 900 sq kms of land covering 60 kms from north to south and 20 kms from east to west. Lanzarote, including the small islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este y del Oeste, covers 900 km² running 60 km north to south and only 20 km at its widest point.
The population of 100,000 people is open to debate as many foreigners live on the island for large chunks of the year without registering themselves as permanent residents. The population of Lanzarote is spread across seven different municipalities and they are as follows: Arrecife, Haria, San Bartolome, Tias, Tinajo, Yaiza and Teguise.
The Islands main business was agriculture and fishing but this has been overtaken by tourism, which now makes up a large part of Lanzarote’s economy.
